The who, what and why of Mentoring Physiotherapists

Who will be your mentor?

First, you probably want to know a little bit about who will be doing the mentoring. My name is Georgia Black, and I am a Sydney-based Physiotherapist. I run a clinic in Gymea and mentor Physiotherapists from all over Australia. I have 20 years of experience in private practice, hospitals, and professional sporting teams. I also work part-time as a lecturer at the Graduate School of Health at UTS Sydney.

I have achieved great outcomes with the physiotherapists I have mentored. You can read what a few of them say about their mentoring experience here.

Who is physiotherapy mentoring for?

Mentoring is perfect for physiotherapists who want to build confidence in a private practice setting. This can include improving your assessment skills, diagnostic competence and treatment skills. Mentoring can also help improve your patient outcomes and your patient numbers, making you an invaluable member of your physio clinic.

You may be a new graduate, a few years out of uni, or transitioning from another role, such as a physiotherapist in the hospital system and moving into private practice.

Mentoring is an effective way to grow your professional physiotherapy career.

What’s involved with physiotherapy mentoring?

Mentoring is a one-on-one service via video call or face-to-face. Sessions are shaped specifically around your needs and goals, factoring in your experience and knowledge. Sessions may vary between patient case studies to assessment, diagnostic and treatment skills on a particular body area.

Advice and education are based on almost 20 years of experience and evidence-based practice. Choose from 1.5-hour sessions each month or 1-hour sessions every few weeks.

In addition to regular mentoring sessions, email support is also included in the mentoring package. Email support covers clinical troubleshooting between mentoring sessions. You may need another point of view or seek guidance on an approach. Sometimes all it takes is a quick email to get clarity. I am always available over email and will endeavour to respond to you within 24-48 hours.

Why is mentoring good for physiotherapists?

Professional development is always a good idea. Specifically, mentoring is great for any physiotherapist who wants to improve their confidence, have excellent patient outcomes and accelerate their career progression. Mentoring also offers a sounding board outside of your usual workplace. It provides another voice and perspective that can explain things differently. I have exceptional communication skills and can break down challenging areas and explain them in a way that makes sense to you.

I look forward to meeting you and helping you grow your career.
